15 April 2021 - Webinar: Information sharing on H2 developments in Germany

In the event green H2 was showcased as a viable energy carrier for a sustainable energy supply and a low-carbon industrial development for the “Here and Now” and not merely for the distant future was emphasized. Speakers from the South African and German industry as well as government representatives shared existing concepts on the topic:

  • Dr. Falk Boemeke, German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy, will present funding mechanisms by the German government for H2 projects outside of the EU
  • Mr. Garrith Bezuidenhout, South African Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, will contextualise South Africa’s green hydrogen innovation and coordination efforts.
  • Dr. Tobias Bischof-Niemz, Enertrag, will showcase their current green H2 projects and their experience in building viable business cases in this burgeoning market.
  • Siemens Energy  will round of the event by highlighting their success in investing early in a niche market in emerging markets.

The event was organized and facilitated by the Southern African German Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

In 2020, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy published its National Hydrogen Strategy. It provides the basis for the market ramp-up of hydrogen technologies. The strategy sets out a framework for action for the production, transport and use of hydrogen. In this way, the German government is triggering investments and innovations, strengthening the domestic economy and promoting international cooperation. South Africa is endowed with some of the best renewable energy resources (wind and solar, inputs to produce green H2) and an established industrial hub of activities in mining (PGMs), cement, steel, iron and chemical production and is therefore an important partner for international cooperation activities in this sector.
