Knowledge Exchange on Flexible Power Plant Management

On the 21st of September 2021, in cooperation with the South African - German Energy Program (SAGEN), we hosted a knowledge exchange on flexible power plant management between ESKOM and representatives from VGB Power Tech, Siemens Energy and Uniper.

With a growing number of intermittent renewable energy capacity added to an energy system, the need for flexibility in incumbent thermal power plants is growing.

In that context the organized knowledge exchange was based around four speakers:

  • Naushaad Haripersad from Eskom Generation spoke about ESKOM’s unit flexibility studies
  • Dr Claudia Weise from VGB Powertech spoke about the market design in Germany and the overall flexibility solutions
  • Rainer Aulfinger from Siemens Energy spoke about Siemens’s approach to flexible plant management and lessons learnt from previous projects
  • Michael Rahilly from Uniper spoke about the transformation process from the perspective of a power plant operating company

The presentations were followed by a lively discussion among the participants on opportunities and challenges for the South African energy market.
